Since bursting onto the international opera scene in 2007 when he won Cardiff Singer of the World, Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang owns an ever-growing portfolio of leading roles and highly acclaimed debuts. Expressive tone, polished diction, vivid characterisations and a sonorous, technically secure voice amount to an indomitable onstage presence that is praised by audiences and critics alike: “Shenyang communicated emotions vividly, the voice velvet and phrasing always elegant, even in the impassioned outbursts” (The Guardian). He is also a strong champion of the vocal treasures of his homeland which he has committed to recordings as well as impassioned live performances around the world.
BBT was on hand with pragmatic assistance to help Shenyang at the start of his career by paying for concert dress, computer equipment, music scores, CDs, student accommodation and, finally, a piano.
Shenyang was supported with a BBT Award between 2008 and 2010.
