Gloria Campaner - About

When I heard Mitsuko Uchida telling me “Welcome to the BBT family”, I felt that my life would never be the same. I think that being part of a family of amazing people whose main purpose is supporting art and music must be the dream of every musician. I remembered being extremely happy and honoured to receive this unique recognition; BBT gives me the drive and the strength to go on with my projects and realise my dreams related to what I love the most in my life: Music!

Gloria Campaner (2015)

Charismatic Italian pianist Gloria Campaner combines her music with a zeal for social change, which encompasses a professorship in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and her charity work with disadvantaged communities from Rio de Janeiro to Myanmar. She has a wide repertoire and has played around the world, although she always loves to come back to her Venetian home – which informed one of her BBT projects.

Gloria’s wide range of repertoire and interest in taking music into new communities are reflected in the choices she made for her BBT funding. Alongside the purely practical – new photographs, developing her website and restoring her piano – Gloria produced three films in collaboration with director Luca Scarzella. The first of these documented the work she developed to inaugurate Renzo Piano’s all-wooden Auditorium del Parco in L’Aquila and featured a collaboration with Dutch dance ensemble Gotra Ballet di Heerlen. The remaining films focussed on Scriabin in his centenary year, and were filmed amongst the monumental sculptures of Pinuccio Sciola in the atmospheric Giardino Sonoro on Sardinia.

Finally, Gloria realised a personal goal of recording an all-Schumann disc for Warner Classics, featuring the composer’s piano concerto coupled with Kinderszenen. In Gloria’s words: “This album tells in a way a story of my life, my dreams, my childhood scenes set in the place where I was born and where I grew up.”

Gloria was supported with a BBT Fellowship between 2014 and 2019.
