BIS Records, staying faithful to Finnish composer Kalevi Aho, starts the composer’s 70th birthday year (2019) with the release of two brass concertos, including the Borletti-Buitoni Trust commission for its 2006 Award winner, Dutch trombonist Jörgen van Rijen, having already recorded Aho’s first BBT commission (the Clarinet Concerto for 2003 Award winner Martin Fröst). On this premiere recording Jörgen is joined by the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and conductor Martyn Brabbins.

The Borletti-Buitoni Trust has helped Jörgen van Rijen to record two recital CDs on Channel Classics. The first of these, “Sackbutt”, showcases the baroque repertoire, exploring trombone pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, in collaboration with early music group Combattimento Consort Amsterdam and conductor Jan Willem de Vriend.
Composers include Albrechtsberger, Bertali, Castello, Marini, Leopold Mozart, Schmelzer and Wagenseil.
An accompanying film, “WOW! FROM BAROQUE TO RIGHT NOW” is also on this website.

The follow up to Jörgen van Rijen’s highly successful debut disc “Sackbutt”, this recital CD includes a personal selection of music as far apart as Mozart, Martijn Padding and Jacob TV. The title track, which expresses the shock side of the WOW! exclamation, can be heard with accompanying video here.

As part of his 2006 Borletti-Buitoini Trust Award, trombonist Jörgen van Rijen commissioned Finnish composer Kalevi Aho for a Trombone Concerto, which he premiered in the Hague in March 2012.
“I am very happy that Kalevi Aho was willing to write this piece for me. Still a lot of people don’t know the beauty of this instrument and this piece gives a great opportunity to show the trombone in all ways. There is not much left that is possible on a trombone that is not somehow appearing in this piece!” Jörgen van Rijen, April 2012.
