Joshua Hopkins - About

I wish to express my deepest gratitude to BBT for creating an opportunity so invaluable to the future of young performing artists. Receiving the recognition of such an esteemed committee of musicians is reward enough, but to also be granted a Trust Award is a dream come true. Having been born ‘across the pond’ in Canada, I had not taken on the challenge of introducing myself to the European artistic community. The great honour of having my name associated with the Trust has given me an exciting opportunity to do so. I hope to introduce Canadian music where it might not otherwise be heard and look forward to sharing my art with new audiences.

Joshua Hopkins (2007)

Joshua Hopkins possesses “a glistening, malleable baritone of exceptional beauty, and the technique to exploit its full range of expressive possibilities, from comic bluster to melting beauty” (Opera Today). These qualities have put him in the international spotlight and onto a great number of prestigious opera stages throughout the US and Canada where he is a regular performer in leading roles, as well as top European platforms.

Joshua’s deep commitment to the art of song was clearly evident in his acclaimed debut recital album, Let Beauty Awake, recorded on the ATMA Classique label and supported by his BBT award, featuring songs of Barber, Bowles, Gluck and Vaughan Williams. BBT also helped with other practical requisites for developing a young singer’s career including funds for European travel, competition and audition expenses, coaching, and new computer, photographs and website.  He was invited to the Verbier Festival Academy as part of BBT’s support of its Chamber Music Programme from 2006 to 2009, where he won the Prix d’Honneur in 2008.

Joshua was supported with a BBT Award between 2006 and 2011.
