So far, I have been able to use my BBT Fellowship to accomplish very practical things, such as a professional photoshoot, promotional concerts, useful performing equipment, and subsidising experimental ensembles with a modern dance troupe. Aside from this, BBT has used its prestige to promote me to important people in the music world. Also, their advice and encouragement have helped me to take steps in the right direction.
South Korean-Dutch harpist Lavinia Meijer is one of the most accomplished and versatile harpists of the 21st century – the only classical musician to enter the top ten of the rock album charts in the Netherlands with three consecutive albums. Lavinia has always been a passionate advocate of the harp as an expressive instrument capable of a wide-ranging repertoire and has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras in Europe and Asia. Over the years she has developed an affinity for the music of Philip Glass, mesmerising audiences with her ground-breaking renditions of his works on record as well as on stage, including with Glass himself.
As well as helping fund many practical necessities, BBT also supported Lavinia’s highly successful debut recording with Challenge Classics for her album, Divertissements, featuring the music of Salzado, Caplet and Ibert; and made a short film, Harpist on a Mission, to coincide with the disc’s release.
Lavinia was supported with a BBT Fellowship between 2007 and 2009.
