Llŷr Williams - About

Spending some of the money from the BBT Award on replacing the worn-out mechanics of my piano has resulted in my being able to achieve things when practising that were previously impossible. Having also spent a small proportion of the total award on this it means also that I can look forward to spending the remainder at a future stage. With the support of the Trust I can now feel increasingly secure in my career.”

Llŷr Williams (2005)

Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams is widely admired for his profound musical intelligence and the expressive and communicative nature of his interpretations. He performs with all the major UK orchestras and as a recitalist in major international concert halls, as well as chamber music with many of the world’s foremost instrumentalists and singers. Llŷr has a lifelong relationship with operatic music, borne out by his fruitful and enduring association with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, of which he is an Honorary Fellow, and also with the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition where he has been one of the two official accompanists for over 20 years.

What could be more important to a musician than his instrument? Llŷr’s BBT Award not only funded the renovation of his old piano, but also paid for the hire of concert pianos and eventually helped with the purchase of a new one. Classical music is my passion, the piano is my life is the title of a short Artist profile film made by BBT at the time of his award.

Llŷr was part of BBT’s 2008 showcase tour to the US (Kalamazoo, Philadelphia and New York) and Europe (Perugia, Amsterdam and London) led by Mitsuko Uchida and also an enthusiastic participant in BBT’s 10th anniversary celebrations in London – on which occasion he not only featured in the main recital programme but also thrilled a late-night audience with his jazzy rendition of the second movement of Ives’ Concord Sonata.

Llŷr was supported with a BBT Award between 2004 and 2008.
