Viviane Hagner - About

I feel very honoured to have been chosen for a BBT Award and hope to fulfil the committee’s expectations. I consider it my obligation to responsibly spend the generous grant for my further musical development with my being privileged to receive advice and support from Mitsuko Uchida.

Viviane Hagner has won exceptional praise for her intelligent musicality and passionate artistry, at home in Germany and throughout the world.  She regularly performs with many of the world’s leading international orchestras and celebrated conductors and is a committed chamber musician too. She brings insight and virtuosity to the core concerto repertoire and is also an ardent advocate of new, neglected and undiscovered music, with many premieres to her name. BBT filmed her at the time of her award as she prepared for the world premiere of a new concerto by Unsuk Chin.

The Trust supported Viviane’s critically acclaimed solo recording debut, Ciaccona, featuring works by Bartók, Hartmann and Bach (Altara Music). The Trust also helped her purchase a new bow and commission an arrangement from German composer Detlev Glanert. Viviane was one of a specially-formed chamber ensemble with fellow BBT alumni Khatia Buniatishvili, Christian Poltéra and Lawrence Power which toured to Amsterdam, London and Eindhoven in 2012 in the lead-up to the Trust’s 10th anniversary the following year.

Viviane is co-founder and artistic director of Krzyżowa-Music in Poland, an annual festival founded in 2014 that provides aspiring young musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform with internationally acclaimed artists. As such, Viviane is one the first recipients of the BBT Artist Encore Award, which will support a new initiative to give these young musicians the skills to develop cultural exchange in the Festival’s local community and, ultimately, in their own less privileged communities at home.

Viviane was supported with a BBT Award between 2004 and 2008.
